The Portugal mix was 100% renewable over the weekend, and it exported energy to Spain

“Between Friday night and Monday morning, all the electricity consumed by the Portuguese was produced in Portugal from renewable energy sources, mainly wind and hydroelectric”. This was announced by the neighboring country's government in a statement, which noted that the production of renewable energies benefited this weekend from favorable wind and rain conditions.

During those three days, Portugal constantly exported energy to Spain. For example, between 10:30 PM on Friday and midnight on Saturday, 172.5 GWh of energy was generated (97.6 GWh wind, 68.3 GWh hydraulic, and 6.6 GWh photovoltaic), Portugal consumed 131.1 GWh, and the surplus was exported through the connection with Spain.

According to IRENA, Portugal had an installed renewable capacity of 16,329 MW in March 2023. Of these, more than 7,500 MW are hydroelectric, nearly 5,500 MW are wind, and 2,536 MW are photovoltaic.

In August, the Portuguese Ministry of Environment allocated 5 GW to operators of transmission and distribution networks, most of them photovoltaic. Also, 1 GW was allocated to projects connected to E-Redes for lower voltage levels. These projects must be connected, at the latest, by 2030.
