The United Nations' sustainable development goals include the need to raise awareness among the population about reducing the use of plastic containers and replacing them with biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives. This trend has been adopted by various business sectors to provide a wide range of options to their customers, including companies that offer cleaning products.

The market offers focusing on sustainability have turned to manufacturing containers with recycled materials, which can range from folding cardboard to PET. One of the most prominent in this regard is Eterna, which has invested about US$4 million in the last three years to adapt its production plants to sustainability practices and the production of eco-friendly products.

Other companies, like Biogar, have 'cruelty-free and vegan' certifications, as well as processes for making containers free of materials like African palm and parabens. In the case of Ecohome, it focuses on the production of recyclable containers made of plants and 100% biodegradable.

There are also companies like Mabek, which have biodegradability certificates for their main products from the National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (Invima). To obtain this seal, up to 60% of the components of each product must biodegrade within a maximum of 28 days.

The importance of this trend has been reflected in public behavior, as sustainability has become a way to generate engagement with consumers, showing them that there is an interest in their current needs and concerns by putting products on the market that meet those expectations.

"If the sustainability message of a product is accurate, it improves its premium perception, as well as the related attributes: quality, superior performance, uniqueness, and modernity of the product," said Sonia Medina, leader of the Nielsen Colombia household panel.

The transition to more sustainable production has not been centralized only in companies whose added value is focused on this aspect, but some of the biggest players in the 'Home Care' segment have also dedicated themselves to creating durable, reusable, and rechargeable containers, as well as bottles of their products made from recycled plastic.

The big players in the trend

This is the case with Unilever, which currently leads the 'Home Care' segment in Colombia with 12.2% of the market share, according to Euromonitor International data. In order to avoid the annual consumption of nearly 80 tons of virgin plastic, the company started using 100% recycled plastic bottles for its Fab detergent two years ago. Meanwhile, the Dove, Rexona, and Axe brands began using stainless steel containers with the aim of making them rechargeable and reusable.

For its part, Colgate-Palmolive launched the first recyclable tube for its toothpaste last year. In turn, the brand committed to using 100% recyclable packaging in all its products by 2025. According to Euromonitor, the company ranks second in the 'Home Care' segment with 8.7% of the market share.

The shift towards eco-friendly packaging has also impacted startups offering cleaning services in homes and businesses.

This is because, beyond the products, it is necessary to work on training cleaning professionals about the correct use of the same, which can be used to avoid contamination and how to use them responsibly, commented the CEO of Hogaru, Juan Sebastián Cadavid.
